Larry found a Kill Deer nest at the park. It was right where the mower was sure to get it. He decided to saved an egg and brought it home. We made a little nest in a tuperware container and paper towels, put it under a light, and waited. I had my doubts that it would hatch and didn't know what to say when the kids asked daily when it would hatch. But, sure enough, a few days later we could hear movements in the egg and an occational peep. I started to get hopeful. Sure enough on Saturday it made a little hole in the egg but didn't make further progress until that evening. It's such a noisy little bugger that we caught it in action and we all got to watch it hatch. It was a lot of fun. It's moment like those that I hope my kids will be able to remember (we have plenty of moments a day I hope they forget!). We named her K.D. short for Kill Deer. So far she's doing really well and eats meal worms, baby duck feed, and an occational baby cricket. We'll keep everyone posted on her growth.
